What we’ve been hearing for the past few days is true after all. The news will be all over in no time if it hasn’t been already – Apple will be switching to Intel chips next year, a transition that’ll be complete by 2005.
While everyone tries to figure out the implications (good and bad), what had the audience gasping was the fact that Apple has (successfully) compiled all versions of Mac OS released in the past five years over Intel chips. That was nothing compared to what Jobs said next – the “Mac” they’d seen him using since the start of the address was actually a P4 running Tiger!!!
I was thinking on my way from work today that if the rumored switch is going to true, I’m sure Apple must have done “some” preparation about porting the OS, if indeed they would be shifting to the x86 architecture, as it now seems they are, instead of a Intel manufactured PPC variant. But this level of preparation is way beyond my, and I’m sure, everyone else’s expectations.
Can’t wait to see the keynote myself.
This just in… “Select and premier ADC member software developers will be getting a build kit.” – now I can finally justify the small extravagance of a select ADC membership to myself 🙂
