A quickish update

Ah, the joys of having tea at 12:45 in the night! (I don’t like to call it morning just because it’s the next day/ date).

The six day Id vacation is over n done with and I’m back at work. Was more than a bit under the weather towards the latter part of the “break”, but almost back to perfect health now. Slept close to 12 hours straight last night, which is huuuuuuuge by my standards, but then if you consider I didn’t sleep for a second the night before, it comes close to evening itself out. Got meself a new phone after much deliberation – a M600i, first recommended by Kashyap. Mayank commented on how I had now gone for a “convergent” device (or a PDA + phone hybrid in any case), after having been in favour of specialist devices, but the truth is I still am in the “individual devices” camp and I’d even considered going down the Palm TX + cheap-bluetooth-EDGE phone, but I faced the same problem as last time i.e. there’s no such freakin’ thing as a “cheap-bluetooth-EDGE phone”, now that the 6021 has been discontinued.

I was having a tough time deciding when I thought, what the heck, let’s go for the M600i and we’ll see how things turn out – it’s a matter of 450 odd US dollars in any case (when you consider the phone and the 1 gig memory card) – tongue firmly in cheek. Not that I thought it’s a bad phone – anything but. It’s just the M2 that was the stumbling block for me – I don’t like proprietary formats and this new-format-a-month thing that Sony seems to be doing isn’t winning me over.

Anyways, my initial impressions of the phone have been mostly positive – especially the keyboard and the copy (from) anywhere-paste (to) anywhere thing that it has going. I must say thought that I haven’t had a chance to “play” with it as much as I would like or normally do with my “toys”. It doesn’t seem to be as responsive as I’d like it to be, but maybe that’s just me and my first time with a touch screen etc. I loved the “landscape” mode in the browser, though the fact I had to horizontal scroll a blogger.com page was a bummer – maybe I should use the zoom option to try and fit more of that page at a readable level next time. Haven’t even upgraded the firmware yet or downloaded any custom applications – will try and post more of my impressions of the phone in due time. I think upgrading the browser (it’s Opera, right?) to the latest version might fix that horizontal scroll “problem” as well.

Received a bunch of books I’d ordered from Amazon and I am more than halfway through reading iWoz, the story of one of the smartest persons the world has ever seen, in (more or less) the words of the great man himself. That man knew what a diode is (was?) at the age of four – four! And boy did he make use of that brain of his – no use having a great mind if you are a lazy git (i’m looking at you, person in the mirror) – there’s a weird combination of pomposity and good old-fashioned self deprecation in one sentence for you right there.

Have also received the Hillegass and Kochan books – so now I have absolutely no excuse not to write that Cocoa application I keep designing in my head.

Now if only they developed a cure for procrastination, things would be pretty darn perfect.

Funny Friday

Saw no less than 4 movies today – not all of all of them, if you know what I mean, but yeah, saw four alright.

Started off the day with Biwi Aur Makaan, a movie about 5 roomies looking up for a new makaan (house) in Bombay (that’s what it was called back then you politically correct jerks), who end up finding biwis (wives) as well. Surprisingly funny until you find out it’s a Hrishikesh Mukherjee, and it isn’t such a big surprise any more.

It stars Mehmood, amongst others, but if you are looking for any slapstick stuff, you’ll be in for a disappointment – if you haven’t guessed that already considering the director. Not exactly what one would term as a “must see” ala Chupke Chupke or Golmaal, but you won’t get bored watching it either.

Moved on to Andaz Apna Apna & Dumb and Dumber later in the day – hadn’t watched the latter till today (turns out hadn’t really missed much). I don’t think either movie needs any introductions, so I’ll leave it at that. All three movies were on the telly, if anyone’s wondering.

Last, but definitely not the least (that would be DnD, above), watched Khosla Ka Ghosla at the nearby theatre. I had made plans to go Wednesday night, but “inertia” got the better of me (what else is new) and decided to order-in instead. Anyways, glad I went today because, between glimpses of Delhi, the Punjabi accent-shackcent, decent story-line, some excellent performances and that weird(ly nice?)-sounding, beautiful woman, I really liked the movie. I could also relate to the father-son relationship portrayal – watch the movie and you’ll know what I mean. Or maybe not.

Amongst other news, coming up soon is a long overdue redesign of the site. Watch this space.

A week is a long time in football (and life)

What a difference seven days can make. The last time I was here, I wasn’t exactly thrilled to bits. While I wouldn’t exactly use the word “love” in the same context yet either, things are looking (much?) better at the moment.

What was wrong? Things at home I don’t wish to talk about here, stuff at work that I can’t talk about and the realisation that I might finally be over a relationship that never was. You might think the last would be a good thing, huh? Go figure. To top it all back to back league defeats at the hands of the Everton and Chelsea, the bitter rivals and defending champions respectively.

Anyone who saw the game against Chelsea (I didn’t but whatever) would agree that the “better side lost” – anyone who isn’t crazy or Jose Mourinho i.e. Anyways, I’m not one to clutch at straws so wouldn’t harp on that but one needs to consider the ridiculously skewed fixture list to keep things in perspective. And yes, no one’s winning 90 points this season – no one. Repeat that until it gets into your head.

Things have changed quite a bit since then. For starters, the Reds are banging in the goals again – 5 in the last 2 games (I even managed to catch the Newcastle game on the telly, which has been a bit of a rarity this year) and two clean sheets as well, thank you very much. That is one less thing to worry about – not that I think my worrying does any good (to me or LFC). But life’s better if your team’s winning, trust me.

More importantly, the thing at home I mentioned above is all but sorted out now – that’s a life++ in a big fancy loop right there. The other two remain, but let’s leave it at that, as things will never be “all sorted out” will they? Life would anyways be too darn boring if that somehow managed to be the case.

PS – I’m finally making some progress writing Cocoa code as well.
