Yahoo 360°

Yahoo seems to be the flavour of the week!

It has launched a new service called Yahoo 360°, which seems to be an interesting take on “new age” blogs. It’s currently in beta and “invitation only” – though I haven’t seen any auctions of this invit of eBay yet 😉 I guess because it’s a we (Yahoo) invite you thing, rather than you (existing users) invite others.

I signed up in the “beta invitation list” a few days ago (when it was launched). You can do the same or visit a sample page.

  1. The only useful thing I took from that page was that it (apparently) follows the you invite others method as well.

That page looks at the service from the point of view of a select band of users, people who’re comfortable with technology. People who are happy running their own blog because it offers them the power and flexibility of doing whatever Yahoo is offering and (much) more.

But, what it doesn’t consider is that your average Joe won’t run WordPress and install plugins for the functionality he wants. 360° is great for a family wanting to share stuff and the likes – that is where the “hide/ show stuff from/ to select users” stuff comes into play.

It might be “lame” for you and me, but to most users it offers exactly what they want – a blog, a place to share photos, friends list etc. – with minimum or zero effort. It’s like a “My Yahoo” page for others. It has an audience, a pretty big one at that is what I am saying.

  2. Aah well u see i thought u posted it coz it was appealing to u. Hence my surprise. But now that you’ve pointed out that it is indeed lame to you (who did run wp and install plugins ;)), i guess your intended target audience wasn’t people such as yourself.
btw what family wants to share a maximum of 4 pictures?

PS – where’s the comment editing and the np php script? 😉
