Delhi in Google Maps

Google Maps has gone global but this is the maximum detail in which I can see Delhi in. What? You can’t see it? It’s exactly in the middle of the map – take my word for it. You have no other option do you?

  1. It’s true Kunal and what is even more surprising is this

This shows the satellite imagery of ITO at 1 metre resolution, thats one of the better resolutions of satellite imageries available in public domain, the best being QuickBird 0.6. And to think that the Indian government implements very strict restrcitions on anybody trying to obtain a satellitie imagery of Delhi because its a sensitive area / restricte area. In fact if you explore except for the north part of delhi you can view the 1m Satellite imagery of the whole of NCR and it includes some very *sensitive* places like the airport the air force station etc. Talk about restrictions. Ha…

In case any body is wodering what these satellite resolutions mean. 1m resolution means any object which is 1 m thick / wide will be represented on the image with one pixel. So that means you can easily recognises buses, cars and individual small landmarks. So in that case imagine what 0.6m can do. They say the US military satellites go below 0.1 !!!

  2. First of all, I am not even sure that is Delhi leave alone ITO because I couldn’t identify a thing. And where on Earth did those beautiful, huge pools and stadiums come from in Delhi man. I wanna goto all those places! Seriously, goto http://maps.google.com and search for “Delhi India” – what comes up is a useless map with nothing to zoom into. That was what I was saying in the original post.

The Latitude/ Longitude in your URL, however, corresponds to in or around Delhi, so maybe you “hacked” your way to it i.e. by directly supplying those values. Is that the case? Is that really saadi dilli?!!

As for satellites, if I recall correctly, India (too) has some 0.3 m ones. If that’s the official word, I wouldn’t be surprised if we have something better as well. Further, India recently launched CARTOSAT-1, the world’s first “stereo” satellite i.e. the same satellite has two cameras which can photograph a point “near simultaneously” to help generate 3-D images. All others achieve this by using two (or more) satellites. This one has a “lower” resolution of 2.5 m though.

Not exactly related but that “US military” bit made me wanna “show off” a bit, as if I had any role to play in CARTOSAT. Of course, Sutanu would know all of what I have said already (and more) as all this is right up his alley so this is really for those who don’t.
